Um...

I tend to like crazy, strange things: jungle trees, Elsa Schiaparelli, duckbill platypusses (platypi?), boys with long hair, tie dye... You get the point I think. I also enjoy a jumpsuit from time to time. I have a couple in my closet I'm waiting to break out on one of those Texas summer days when it's 120 degrees outside. This particular outfit though, kind of left me speechless and not in a super great way. See for yourself below:

Sooo stylin'
I just don't know what to make of it. So naturally, I put myself in it and placed photographic evidence of me wearing something heinous online for all the world to see. Go me. Plus I'm showing off some sweet tan lines.
Sassy model pose!
So if pictures are worth a thousand words, these have to be worth at least 3500. Insert your own captions.

It's All In The Math...

I've always bee good at math. I can calculate square footage, profit margins, graph and draft like nobody's business. In college, this meant I always did the analytical work because the "fashion students" "couldn't"/ didn't want to. Whatevs, I like being smart. Anywhoos, this leads me to the subject of this post which is STYLE MATH.

Everybody's style is a mixture of everything they see in different combinations. Even if all you wear every day is a pair of straight leg jeans, a white t-shirt and black flip flops, that was influenced by something, say a hesitance (pansy-assed-ness) to try out the things you see other people wearing. Having the analytical mind that I do, I've comprised a very stylish math formula (with pictures!) of people that I think have influenced the current way I dress.

See below:

In words (aka, if you don't know who these people are) here it is:

Zooey Deschanel + 3/8 Man Repeller + Rooney Mara + Edie Sedgewick  = ME!

                           Debbie Harry + Han Solo

Yeah I know the there's a fictional male character in there. But how suave is that guy! Plus I sit like that a lot.
So there's my style formula. What's yours?

P.S. I'm really impressed with my eyebrow-raising ability in this pic. Yeah, I'm looking at you over there.

bleh...

I have the "dreaded." It's the ugly 'ol designer's block. I can't muster motivation to do anything, I can't think of anything even if I had the motivation and I'm completely clueless as to what paths to take towards a final goal. So my brain became overwhelmed and gave up. Hence the ugly ol' designer's block.

I am Gray! I will rob you of creative thought!
Yeah, I did say he was ugly. One the plus side, I registered the domain name "www.emm8apparel.com" today so I guess that's a step to somewheres.

Answering The Cliche Questions....

When one works in fashion, it's hard to not be a cliche. We all know them: pretty blonde girl goes to college to get a fashion degree on daddy's money, gets super tan and carries bags that cost a year's tuition, and then moves to cliche big city to work at  cliche fashion magazine/expensive retail store/top design office that she got into using rich daddy's contacts (p.s. this is not my story). Tell me I'm not the only one who sees it. Please.

When one starts a fashion business, it seems to get even more cliche and done over. So as I attempt to start a clothing brand, I'm trying to avoid using strategies and goals that are so typical they make me sigh when someone says them. Par example:

"I want to make women beautiful."- Well duh we all do. Unless you're Muiccia Prada or Grimes, who, despite their best efforts to make themselves or others look weird, are still gorgeous.

"I want to put my signature style out there."- If you make others look like you, it won't be your signature anymore.

"I want to create a quality garment that is unique."- Noble, but difficult and this goal isn't unique.

Despite my bestest efforts, eventually I will run into the cliche. I chose this field and dang it, I'll stick by it. I don't know how to do anything else for Heaven's sake!

So in an attempt at brand creation, I have answered the question "What is the purpose of your brand?" in the least cliche way I can think of:

To make people feel awesome in there own skins while being environmentally responsible. I want to create garments that the wearer will be proud to display on her/his body. I want people to walk around in my stuff and have strangers ask them on the street, "Hey I love that thing you're wearing!" And I want to make things that last past season and trend, for years.

Well there you have it. Be on the lookout for this goal in action in July 2012 when I (Lord willing) open my Etsy shop, emm8apparel.

Thanks,
Bye.

Who You Gonna Call...?

Found this gem while walking under 75 highway the other day.

Sort of ironically, it was by an ice cream shop.

Missing Pieces...

I definitely feel like some pieces of my brain have fallen off today.

Help! I've lost my frontal lobe!
